Elections Should be Boring

It has to be said, that my hope is that what I'm about to say, is something most people could universally agree on. Of course we can happily discuss details of statements I will make, and I will even accept the completely opposite opinion "Elections should be exciting". However, this is not a partisan issue and should not be understood as such. My hope is, that in the end, you will be convinced that elections should be boring.

So, elections should be boring. Why? Well, if you have an somewhat even distribution of yay or nay sayers among a population. Maybe there are slightly more of one than the other (since we need a decision: yay/nay). If these are then evenly distributed among your population, you should know the outcome of your election before you counted all the votes. The distribution should not change halfway through counting. Now you might say, there are natural reasons for yay or nays to be clumped in groups. This can happen. However, is that good for anyone? It only opens up the for easy manipulation. "Those votes coming in at the beginning are mostly for that decision: let us just delete them." "Those votes coming from that region are mostly for the other decision: let us just delete them." If you shuffle all votes, before you count them, you could avoid this problem and have more boring elections. Shuffling the votes before counting also makes it harder to cheat when counting. We can test if everybody counted roughly equally, an uneven distribution afterwards would hint at tampering.

Another case for boring elections would be the human argument. When having elections, we are not trying to destroy each other. We are all still in the same boat trying to achieve something together. One person should not get an extrodinate amount of wealth based on who wins an election. All people are able to become rich no matter who is in power in a functioning democracy. We disagree on policy differences on how to handle very specific issues. We all live on the same planet and need it to survive. Nobody is campaigning on a platform to turn off oxygen supply to the world in a mass suicide. If elections were boring we would be able to realise this and move on with our lives. Nobody should be faced with an existential threat depending on the outcome of an election. Elections should be boring.

I have repeated myself often enough. To me, most elections are boring and I believe that is a good thing.

Tune in tomorrow and maybe I can tell you why elections should be exciting!
